A reason to smile

A smile is a beautiful gift.  It has the power to change a person.  From a smile, laughter is born.  Smiling at someone else can change the entire dynamic of their day.  A smile is an outward expression of a person’s heart.  It shows with one quick facial expression how the person feels.  Yes, it can be argued that smiling is just a formality and is sometimes fake but a genuine smile is different.  Smiling when you mean it shows an overflow of your heart.

Life might not be going how you expected it to go but that isn’t a reason to drown in your sorrows.  Jesus alone is the reason to smile.  I smile to share the love of Christ with others even if it’s just a passing glance – that person may need it more than you’ll ever know.  When someone says you have a powerful smile, it’s not because of the smile itself, but the heart behind that glows and channels into the outward expression.  Though it is true that smiling does not solve everything and you can love Christ while mourning, why wouldn’t you want to show the world what Christ has done for you?  Jesus has changed me and that’s all I need to smile about.  Even when the rest of my world falls apart, I can still smile because of Jesus.  He gives an indescribable joy that the world cannot understand.  Apart from him, this joy is unattainable.  But through him, the fountains of joy overflow.

“Amazing grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me. I once was lost but now I am found, was blind, but now I see. Oh I can see you now, oh I can see the love in your eyes. Laying yourself down, raising up the broken to life.”

–  Broken Vessels, Hillsong Worship

God’s grace gives us a reason to smile, the only reason we need and sometimes the only reason we have.  Another song I love that has been speaking to me lately is Jesus is Better by Austin Stone Worship.  The most powerful line in the song is the bridge, “Jesus is better. Make my heart believe.”  I love this line because it inspires me to hold on to Jesus when I want to hold on to so many other things.  It reminds me that Jesus is always superior and will forever sustain me no matter what I desire to believe that contradicts that.  Even when I feeling low and discouraged, he picks me up and holds me in his loving hand.  His comfort surpasses any comfort anyone else can give you.  Yes, God can use people on earth to show his comfort and love but you can’t fully experience and appreciate that unless you are deeply rooted in him.  I am learning day-by-day how to be fully satisfied with Jesus.  It’s definitely a process, but I’m growing so much closer to Jesus by relying on him alone.  Though I may not always feel like sharing God’s love with others, he calls me to obedience not based on feelings.  I know I cannot achieve this calling on my own strength or I will fail every time, but that’s where God steps in and is right beside me.  It’s not always easy to follow Jesus, but I am so glad he’s a God who helps me every step of the way.  Try to smile at everyone you come in contact with today and see how God uses you to spread his joy.
